John Bear took an easy day and kayaked around the Okarito Lagoon. The lagoon is formed by sea water washing back up a flat river bed. There is still gold in the rivers in this area.

There are river channels in the lagoon, and John Bear followed one up into the jungle a short way. The dark water is the channel, and the light colors are the spots where the glacier silt is nearly above the water. There are lots of jungle plants on the river banks.

There is something very peaceful about floating on the lagoon with the water reflecting the sky.

After awhile, we noticed that the little "rocks" on the lagoon silt were actually sea snails... millions of them.

We stayed at the Royal Hostel in Okarito. It is at the end of the earth, charges $9 per night which includes laundry.
