Dr. Bruce Grossan of the University of California Space Sciences Lab and the Berkeley Center for Cosmological Physics right of center. At left of center, SN 1994I: A massive, exploding star in the Whirlpool galaxy (M51) recorded in the Infra-Red (2.1 micron K' band), taken at the Wyoming IR Observatory (WIRO) 4/16/94. The galaxy is about 9 Mpc (~27 Million Light-Years) distant. At right, the ELFLOCK (Eureka-LBNL Lockman Hole) map, the largest, most sensitive map of a low-dust region made with the Spitzer 160 µm Camera. The cosmic far-IR background that I study in this image comes from galaxies at z~ 1, about 8 billion light years distant, emitted at a time whe the universe was about half its present age.

Bruce runs the experimental program at the Energetic Cosmos Laboratory at NU, including work as PI of the fast-response OIR telescope, the NUTelA-TAO, and the Burst Simultaneous Three-channel Imager (BSTI) Instrument.

Bruce is the PI of the The NUTTelA-TAO (Nazarbayev Univesity Transient Telescope at Assy-Turgen Astrophysical Observatory) Project

The NUTTelA-TAO has our instrument, the Burst Simultaneous Three-Channel Imager (BSTI; PI Grossan), three EMMCCD cameras simultaneously recording the same sky, and responding to Swift GRB alerts within < 8 s to measure the prompt GRB spectral shape (see my JHEA article, above). Below, you can see our progress viewing the sky (should be updated weekly). ATO has far from perfect weather, but you can see we're regularly accumultating time on the sky.

NGRG Next Generation Optical-IR Space Observatory for GRB and other transients

We studied hundreds of Swift X/gamma GRB light curves and Swift UVOT observations in order to estimate the early behavior of GRB. We then applied these findings, using trigger algorithms and instrument designs to predict the observation rates for a rapid-response instrument of modest size, with a NIR camera. We found that our very conservative analysis based on real data (not a theoretical estimate) yielded exciting new science on extinguished bursts with good event rates. Extreme Universe Laboratory (EUL)

Bruce Grossan participated in the founding of the EUL, and continues to engage in Collaborating Scientist Activities- Advising on design of gamma-ray bursts experiments, running internships for Moscow State University Students, and helping run the annual EUL Moscow GRB Conference.

The Ultra-Fast Flash Observatory (UFFO)

Bruce is now a regular collaborator on UFFO. Bruce resigned from all leadership positions after being Co-PI from approx. 2009-2012 (due to scientific management disagreements).

Current Status
Having eliminated our worry that extinguished SNe were lurking all over our starburst glaxies, are currently preparing to concentrate our efforts on the starburst nucleus. We will be using the ORCA camera, with its smaller field, and higher resolution to obtain the small subtraction residuals we need in the nucleus.
